INSPIRED WRITERS NEEDED FOR POETRY/PROSE CONTEST

Freeport, NY February 13, 2007 – The Walt Whitman Birthplace is holding a writing contest inspired by images from the photographic series MIRACLES by Pauline Southard. The contest accepts both poetry and prose, and is open to entrants age 15 and up. Contest entries may be submitted from February 28 through March 31, 2007. Prizes of up to $100 in value will be awarded. Winners will receive their prizes and read their work at the Opening Reception for the full exhibit of MIRACLES on April 22 2007, at 1:30 PM at the Walt Whitman Birthplace in Huntington, NY.

Freeport artist Pauline Southard created the images for this exhibit in response to Walt Whitman’s Poem lyrics of Miracles, which celebrates the wondrous nature of everyday life. Ms. Southard’s photographs capture “seemingly ordinary moments that can be imbued with a magical quality, as well as those moments that lift us out of our everyday existence into the world of the truly miraculous and numinous.” The public is invited to reply to the images and write their own visions of the miraculous..
